Rock Engravings at Twyfelfontein

The mountainous regions of central Namibia contain some of the most spectacular natural galleries in the world – a lasting legacy of the San people. Namibia’s first World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein Rock Art Site, is home to the largest collection of the rock engravings on the African continent, with more than 2500 images carved on a couple of hundred boulders, dating back to the Stone Age, 2000 to 6000 years ago.

Local guides lead tour around the major sites and there’s a small but informative interpretive centre. The Ceremony Rock at Twyfelfontein Country Lodge (the closest accommodation) also has a panel of engravings.

The video (See the Video Tab) shows a hunting dance of the traditional Damara. A group of Damara established a Living Museum close to Twyfelfontein in Namibia - its a unique possibility to learn about the almost forgotten culture of this language group and tribe in Namibia.
